Customizing the appearance of your new Blog

I must say that the default theme comes with the latest versions of WordPress is much better than the themes provided up to version 2.9.2, but still, overall is not a choice for a serious blog. Why? Because you want to look unique. If you and thousands of others are using the default theme, then you are lost in the crowd of looking even blogs.

Find free themes

The first thing to do is look for good looking on the internet for some free themes to start from. There are thousands to choose from, some on WordPress.org and others on a myriad of all the other sites. Take your time and find some that you like the looks of. I never just choose one and start with that, because very often what appears on the sample is completely different when you install. I even download themes and installed them, to see that they are not compatible with some popular browsers.

So download some themes, unzip them to your computer and download them to your blog (if you have not done before, you load the directory integer theme wp-content/themes).

Install a theme

Now sign your admin user and go in appearance and look for a new theme. Click to preview and choose enable. Then an a look at your blog and see if it seems good. If you are not sure, enable one of the themes that you downloaded, and try again.

Customise it!

Adaptation to your disposal depend of you theme as some have different color of header options and so forth. If this is your first theme you downloaded you must also go to settings and name your blog and give it a description. "Just another wordpress blog" is proudly displayed on the top of your blog is not a serious impression!

Take a look at lateral bars you new blog look and see what changes you want to do. You'll love to go to the menu appearance widgets and choose a few widgets to install. You can select widgets for any another array of options, for example different ways to view the archives. Personally, I'd have the archives available on each page, but depending on what you do with the blog might not be necessary. A blow of eye through widgets and select that you want to display and how.

If you are happy with a bit of PHP code you can modify the code instead of using widgets. For example, I always delete the list category in the list of displayed categories (just add & exclude = 1). My reason being that if I write off-topic, then it is not so essential to bind across.

There are loads of would ask that you can do exactly what you do is your choice, you will probably change for a long time.
