There are million of websites and blogs today and they are increasing day-by-day. According to Technorati, about 1.5 million blogs are posted in last 7 days and this is bound to increase as the number of Internet users are increasing exponentially every day. Out of these, many are looking out for ways to increase the traffic to their websites or blogs and lot many are failing to do so. In this article I list out most popular and effective methods of promoting your website or blog and in the process increase the traffic. These are listed according to importance in the order. In my future articles, I will focus on each one and provide you the tips or ways to increase your traffic using that method.
1 Search engine traffic: This is the most powerful method of promoting your website or blog for free. This is achieved by providing a good content website or blog for the readers so that others can link to your website or blog. The effect of this is you will be recognized as some sort of expert in your chosen topic and therefore more and more people will visit your site on daily basis. The combined effect of this that the search engines like Google, Yahoo and AOL will rank your website pages higher over time. So, when a web user types in the keywords related to your topic, your website or blog will come up first in the search results and then you know the result of it There is highest probability that the web user will click your website link and visit your website or blog. Also it is most cost effective way to increase your traffic (called as organic traffic) as you will be not paying a penny to get this kind of traffic to your website or blog.
2 Article marketing: One of the popular methods to increase the traffic to your website or blog is through articles. This form of promotion is widely known as Article marketing. It is nothing but you are writing a bunch of articles related to your topic of website or blog and then submitting those articles to article directories. You can submit these articles for free to these article directories. There are number of article directories on the web and here are the most popular ones: ezinearticles.com, ArticlesBase.com. So, you may be thinking how you will benefit from it? Here is the answer for it. When you submit an article to any of these directories, you will providing some links to your website or blog at the end of the article in a small box called Resource box. In this box, you will provide your brief bio and what is your website or blog about. You need to keep it short and ad free as the purpose of the box is to give some idea about you and your website for the reader of your article, thus helping them to understand you better. If he is interested to learn more about you or your offerings, he will use the link provided in it to visit your website or blog. The articles you submit, if contains good content, will be picked up by others to use the same in their newsletters, email marketing campaigns, etc., with giving you due credit by putting your details. Once you start submitting the articles with good content, over the time, you will be more popular and recognized as an expert in your area.
3 Link exchange: Although it is an old method, it is still effective to increase your website or blog popularity. In this method, you will do a link exchange with other websites or blog who have related content or products of your site. It means you will agree to put a text or banner link on your site of others and in exchange they will put yours on their sites. There are some drawbacks to this as you will be giving away valuable outbound links. It is advantageous if you get the inbound links (links pointing to your site from other websites) from the websites with high page rank as your own rank will increase over time and thus will be more helpful to appear higher in the Search engine results.
4 Viral marketing: It is one of the most powerful methods to increase your popularity. The viral marketing is something your readers will do to increase your popularity. It is basically a word-of-mouth advertising. And this happens only when your readers are impressed by your content and spread the word themselves without you being involved in it anyway. The most popular example is search engine giant Google. It has become purely by word of mouth and it is popular due to its powerful search engine providing good results for every word available on the Internet. There are many ways apart from good content or product to bring traffic to your website or blog like widgets, email newsletters, free gifts like eBooks, reports, affiliate marketing, etc. One of the widgets I am using on my blog is Tell-a-friend widget which helps the readers to send the link of the page of my blog to their friends without opening a new window in the browser and logging into it and then send the link. Also there is another widget on my blog used to bookmark my blog page in the user's favourite bookmarking websites rapidement being on the same page.
5 Social bookmarking: One of the recent methods to increase the popularity of a website or blog is to use the social bookmarking websites. The popular among them are Digg, Twitter, Technorati, reddit, Del.icio.us, etc. It is way to bookmark your favourite web pages on the Internet online, which can be both public and private, instead of bookmarking them on your browser. These then can be used to share with others on the web, which contain tags, rankings, and other stuff which shows how many people are using your website or blog.
6 Feeds: This is a method where visitors of your website or blog can subscribe to your content freely. This is done by clicking the RSS feed button on any website or blog. For example, on the upper right corner, there is a small orange button on my blog. It is called RSS feed button. When you hover the mouse over it, it displays the text "Subscribe to rss feed". It means when you click it, it will take you to a page where you should use the URL to add to your feed reader like Google, Yahoo or any other you use. When you do it, you will get all my future blog posts delivered automatically to your email where you can read and comment, if you want. This is very popular and used by million of users today. There are services like Feedburner where you can display the number of users who have subscribed to your RSS feeds and bigger this number, more popular you are. This is a kind of marketing yourself telling how popular you are on your chosen topic.
